ChatGPT ads: how they work, what they cost, and what they don't change
What OpenAI sells, what it charges, and why a sponsored slot under the answer is a different thing from being named in it.

ChatGPT ads are paid placements that OpenAI shows under ChatGPT's responses to adult users on the Free and Go plans. Testing started in the US on February 9, 2026, self-serve buying opened on May 5, 2026, and advertisers now pay per thousand impressions, per click or through conversion-optimized bidding, with a minimum budget of $25 a day for US-dollar accounts. OpenAI's stated rule is that ads do not influence the answers.
That rule is the part marketers tend to skip. The sponsored unit sits below the response, while the brands named inside the response are chosen by the model, much as Google AI Mode chooses which sites it cites. Money buys the slot under the answer. A mention in the answer depends on what the model finds about you, and Hypervisible, the software we publish, tracks exactly that: how often ChatGPT and four other AI engines name your brand, week after week.
Can you advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. A business whose legal entity is based in a supported country can sign up at ads.openai.com, add a credit card, pass verification and run campaigns in OpenAI's Ads Manager, which is still labeled beta.
OpenAI went from a closed test to an open platform in about three months, then kept adding countries:
- January 16, 2026: OpenAI publishes its ad principles and says testing will start for logged-in US adults on the Free and Go tiers.
- February 9, 2026: the US test begins with a small group of advertisers buying on a CPM basis.
- March 26, 2026: OpenAI announces pilots in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
- May 5, 2026: the self-serve Ads Manager beta opens, along with cost-per-click bidding; OpenAI had just added a pixel and a Conversions API for measurement. Agency groups (Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, WPP) and ad tech partners such as Adobe, Criteo and StackAdapt help advertisers buy.
- August 11, 2026: ads are live in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
- August 18, 2026: OpenAI announces 31 European markets, including France, Germany and Spain. Self-serve access there follows on August 31.
By August, OpenAI said tens of thousands of marketers had advertised on ChatGPT. Its advertiser site quotes Newegg and shows Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint among its early advertisers.
Self-serve access depends on where the advertiser is incorporated, and OpenAI's availability page listed 89 countries on October 22, 2026. New self-serve accounts may be held to their home country until identity verification clears and they have spent enough there. Every ad is reviewed before it serves. Political advertising is not allowed. Larger advertisers can still go through OpenAI's sales team or an agency partner.
Where ads appear, and who sees them
ChatGPT ads appear below a response, as a single unit labeled as sponsored and set apart from the answer. A standard unit shows the advertiser's name and logo, a headline, a short description, an image and a link to the landing page.
Two more formats exist. Retailers can upload a product feed, and the resulting ads show product images, titles, star ratings, prices and sale prices. During image generation, OpenAI is testing a multi-image ad from one advertiser that disappears once the user's picture is ready. Users can also pick “Ask ChatGPT” from an ad's menu to ask about it, or message the advertiser directly, in which case the advertiser sees only the messages sent to it.
Whether someone sees ads depends on their plan:
| ChatGPT plan | Sees ads | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes | Can switch to Ads-Free, with lower message limits and no image generation or deep research |
| Go ($8 a month at its US launch in January 2026) | Yes | Ads-Free is a Free-plan option only |
| Plus, Pro | No | Paid plans without ads |
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | No | No ads on work or school accounts |
Even on Free and Go, ads stay out of some situations. Accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18, through stated age or OpenAI's age prediction, see no ads, and neither do Temporary Chats. Ads are not eligible to appear next to conversations about personal health, mental health or politics. The help center also mentions ads in logged-out sessions, limited to ads suitable for all audiences.
Matching relies on the current conversation, the ad's own text and landing page, and the advertiser's “context hints”, short descriptions of when an offer is relevant. OpenAI stresses that these hints are not exact-match keywords. When ad personalization is on, ChatGPT can also use past chats, memory and how the user reacted to earlier ads.
Users can turn personalization off, hide or report an ad, see why it appeared, and clear their ad data, which OpenAI keeps for up to 30 days after deletion. Personalized ads are not offered for now in the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Advertisers receive aggregated numbers only, never chats, memories, names, emails, precise locations or IP addresses.
What a ChatGPT ads campaign costs
ChatGPT ads have no rate card. Prices come out of an auction, and the entry ticket for a US-dollar account is a minimum budget of $25 a day (€15 or £15 for accounts billed in euros or pounds).
Each campaign picks one of three objectives, and the objective sets what you pay for:
| Objective | You pay for | What OpenAI says |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Every 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Built for reach and exposure |
| Clicks | Each valid click (CPC) | Suggested starting bid of $3 to $5 per click |
| Conversions | Valid clicks (oCPC) or impressions (oCPM) | Optimizes toward a purchase, lead or sign-up, never billed per conversion |
Advertisers set a maximum bid for each ad group. OpenAI then runs what it calls a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so the highest bid does not automatically win. A budget set per day works as an average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week: spend can reach twice the daily amount on a single day and seven times it over the week. Billing is postpaid, charged to the card on file whenever the account crosses its payment threshold, and at the end of each month.
Prices moved fast during the pilot. In April 2026, Digiday reported that CPMs had fallen from $60 at launch to as low as $25, with the agency Jellyfish seeing averages closer to $45, and that the minimum spend to join had dropped from $250,000 to $50,000. Those figures describe the managed pilot. Self-serve buyers today start from the $25 daily floor and their own bids.
A quick sense of scale: a 30-day test at that minimum spends about $750. At a $4 average click, that buys fewer than 200 visits. It is enough to see whether the traffic converts, and too little to judge a whole category.
OpenAI says it has no performance benchmarks yet across advertisers, industries or campaign types. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC and CPM, plus conversions once the OpenAI pixel or Conversions API is in place. Spend figures can lag by 7 to 8 hours, so a dashboard showing $0 does not mean nothing has been charged.
Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says they don't. Its help center states that ads run on systems separate from the chat model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or change ChatGPT's responses.
A few product rules back that up. ChatGPT cannot see the ads shown to a user unless the user shares one through “Ask ChatGPT”, and OpenAI says advertisers don't influence what ChatGPT says about an ad shared that way. Products uploaded in a feed are used for ads only during the beta, and OpenAI states they will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations. A campaign buys no input into the text above the ad.
The same wall works against advertisers. Buying ads does nothing for your place in the answer. The ad is matched to the topic of the conversation, so it can land under a response that recommends three competitors and leaves you out. Plan for the answer and the ad separately.
OpenAI's promise is a policy commitment, and advertisers take it on trust. What any marketer can check is the output: which brands ChatGPT names for a given question, and how often.
Paid placement vs being cited
A ChatGPT ad rents a labeled slot under the answer, in the sessions OpenAI's system judges relevant, for as long as the budget runs. A citation is your brand named or linked inside the answer itself, for anyone who asks, on any plan.
| Criterion | ChatGPT ad | Citation in the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Below the response, labeled as sponsored | Inside the response |
| Who can see it | Adults on Free and Go, outside sensitive topics | Users on every plan, including Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise |
| How you get it | Bids, budget, creative, context hints | Pages the model can read, consistent facts about you across the web, reviews, comparisons |
| What you pay | CPM, CPC or optimized bidding, $25 a day minimum in the US | No media cost, the work is content and reputation |
| How you measure it | Ads Manager: impressions, clicks, spend, conversions | Share of answers that cite you, position in the answer, rank against competitors |
| When it stops | When the campaign stops | When the AIs stop finding you; answers also vary from one session to the next |
The row that matters most for B2B brands is the second one. A buyer comparing software on a company ChatGPT Business account will never see your ad. For that buyer, the answer is the only place you can appear.
How ChatGPT picks the brands it names is a subject of its own, covered in our guides on how ChatGPT chooses its sources and on ChatGPT search. One technical point touches both channels. OpenAI requires ad landing pages to let its OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot crawlers in, and its crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. A robots.txt file that shuts that crawler out hurts your ads and your organic presence at once.
Measuring organic citation with Hypervisible
You measure organic citation by putting your buyers' questions to the AIs on a fixed schedule and recording which brands come back. Hypervisible, built by the GEO agency NEXUS GEO in France, keeps that schedule for you; its readings come from data from Google and the AI engines, the same answers real users get.
Two of its features matter most to an advertiser. Each Monday the identical question set is asked again and the shift is shown in points, which lets you watch the answers while a campaign runs and check for yourself that the ads leave them alone. The report also goes well past yes or no. It gives the share of answers naming you (the citation rate), your usual rank inside the answer, how you compare with rivals on the same pool of answers, the sources ChatGPT and the others cite, and the wording and tone used about your brand.
The engines it reads are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Questions can be set for four countries where ChatGPT ads already run, namely the US, the UK, France and Germany, in English, French or German as fits. Two limits: Hypervisible reads once a week, and it doesn't cover Claude or Copilot.
Start with the free AI visibility check: 10 questions, 5 about your sector that don't name you and 5 that do, put to the 5 engines. That's 50 answers, read within 5 to 10 minutes, and no credit card goes in at any point. Plans are on the pricing page.
Ads or organic citation: where to spend first
For most brands, measure the organic picture before buying. If ChatGPT already names you on your core questions, ads extend your reach into the conversations where it doesn't. If it never names you, your ad will sit under answers that recommend someone else.
The right order also depends on what you sell:
- Retailers with a large catalog: OpenAI says product-feed ads have been among the strongest performers in its program so far. A capped CPC test with conversion tracking is a reasonable first step.
- B2B software and services: buyers who use ChatGPT through a Business or Enterprise workspace never see ads. Organic citation comes first, and ads can test messaging with Free users.
- Health, finance and other regulated categories: OpenAI applies stricter eligibility to these advertisers and keeps ads away from sensitive conversations, so paid reach is limited by design.
- Brands selling in Europe: ads now run in 31 European markets, without personalization in the EEA and Switzerland for the moment, which leaves the conversation itself as the main targeting signal.
A workable sequence for a US brand: run a free check of your core questions, fix the gaps those answers reveal, then test ads on the questions where you stay absent, and keep tracking the answers while the campaign runs, since the ads will not move them.
Nobody serious can promise a fixed spot in ChatGPT's answers, because they change from one session to the next. What you can follow is the trend.
The free analysis asks 10 questions to five AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode), reads the 50 answers in 5 to 10 minutes and keeps your dashboard in your account.
Frequently asked questions
Does advertising on ChatGPT work?
There is little public data yet. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads has no performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types, though it reports that product-feed ads have been among its strongest performers. Results will vary by category and by how well the ad matches the conversation. The sensible test is a capped click or conversion campaign with the OpenAI pixel or Conversions API set up, judged on conversions and not on clicks alone.
Do paying ChatGPT users see ads?
Most paying users do not. OpenAI shows no ads on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. The Go plan, priced at $8 a month when it launched in the US in January 2026, does include ads, like the Free plan. Free users can switch to an Ads-Free mode that removes ads in exchange for lower message limits and no access to some tools, such as image generation and deep research.
Do ads influence ChatGPT's answers?
According to OpenAI, no. Its help center says ads run on systems separate from the chat model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. Ads appear below the answer, labeled as sponsored. Products uploaded in an ad feed are not used in organic conversations during the beta. So buying ads won't get a brand mentioned inside the answer.
Who can buy ChatGPT ads?
Businesses whose legal entity is based in a country where Ads Manager is available, which includes the US, Canada, the UK and the 31 European markets added in August 2026. Advertisers sign up at ads.openai.com with an OpenAI account, add a credit card, complete verification and submit ads for review. Larger advertisers can work with OpenAI's sales team or an agency partner. Political advertising is not allowed.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
There is no fixed price. ChatGPT ads are sold by auction and billed per thousand impressions, per click, or through conversion-optimized bidding that still bills clicks or impressions. For US-dollar accounts the minimum budget is $25 a day, and OpenAI suggests starting click bids at $3 to $5. Digiday reported pilot CPMs falling from $60 at launch to as low as $25 by April 2026.
How do you check whether ChatGPT mentions your brand?
Hypervisible, the software we publish, puts the same buyer questions to ChatGPT every Monday, along with Gemini, Perplexity and Google's two AI answers, and reports how often your brand is named, where it sits in the answer and which competitors appear beside it. Its free check runs 10 questions and reads the 50 answers in 5 to 10 minutes. By hand, ask your questions in a signed-out browser and log the brands named each time.
Can you turn off ads in ChatGPT?
Partly. Free and Go users can turn off ad personalization, hide or report ads, and clear their ad data in Settings, under Ads controls. Those settings only change which ads you see. To remove ads entirely, a Free user can switch to Ads-Free with lower limits, or upgrade to Plus or Pro. Temporary Chats never show ads.
